Now, AI agents are beginning to take a more active role: executing commands, troubleshooting failures and progressing through attacks with limited human involvement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The techniques are often familiar, but AI makes them faster, easier to reproduce and more scalable.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From AI-assisted to AI-driven attacks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In AI-assisted attacks, humans remain responsible for decisions while AI helps to: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>generate phishing messages;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>write malicious code;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>research vulnerabilities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>analyze stolen data;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>create deepfakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>AI-operated attacks go further. An agent can interact with systems, execute code, interpret results and automatically correct failed attempts.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A botnet rebuilt in six minutes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2026, Trend Micro analyzed Gemini CLI sessions associated with the threat actor \u201cbandcampro\u201d. The attacker used the terminal-based AI agent to manage infrastructure controlling eight compromised computers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gemini wrote server code, deployed it, configured Cloudflare tunnels and resolved connection issues. When the command-and-control environment became unstable, the AI rebuilt it on a new server in approximately six minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The human operator contributed only a small proportion of the session. When a login attempt failed, the agent diagnosed the problem and corrected its approach within 31 seconds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack relied on common weaknesses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>known vulnerabilities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>exposed services;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>default credentials;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>insufficiently protected administration interfaces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>AI connected these weaknesses into a complete attack chain and executed it at machine speed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_45-PM-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_45-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_45-PM-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_45-PM-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_45-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_45-PM.png 1672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>AI-driven extortion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic also reported a campaign in which Claude Code supported attacks against at least 17 organizations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI automated reconnaissance, credential theft and data analysis. It also helped calculate ransom amounts and generate personalized extortion messages, with some demands exceeding USD 500,000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach, described as \u201cvibe hacking\u201d, allows attackers to define the objective while AI performs much of the technical work. It also lowers the entry barrier for less experienced cybercriminals. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_51-PM-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_51-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_51-PM-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_51-PM-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_51-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/euroone.hu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ChatGPT-Image-Jul-21-2026-01_04_51-PM.png 1672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>What changes for defenders?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI does not remove the importance of traditional weaknesses, but it changes how quickly they can be exploited. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Attack cycles become shorter: <\/strong>failed actions can be corrected within seconds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The entry barrier falls:<\/strong> fewer specialist skills are required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Attacks scale more easily:<\/strong> messages, scripts and infrastructure can be regenerated on demand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intrusions become adaptive:<\/strong> blocking one method may only trigger another.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SOC teams face a growing speed gap: <\/strong>manual investigation cannot easily match machine-speed attacks. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Defending against AI-enabled attacks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizations must continue to patch exposed systems, remove default credentials, protect administrative interfaces, restrict privileges and secure API keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, they must also reduce the time between detection, investigation and response.
